Quiet, please! The need for noise reduction in hospital settings

Noisy hospital environments are undesirable for both patients and healthcare workers. But what can be done to quieten critical devices in this setting? This blog looks at the features needed in power solutions for hospital environments and outlines safety and compliance considerations which should be front of mind for design engineers.

Overview

  • Excessive noise disrupts patient recovery and staff efficiency making silent, sealed devices essential for comfort and disinfection.
  • Efficient heat conduction in sealed medical devices optimizes reliability and extends service life.
  • Device designers need a regulator-approved, off-the-shelf power solution that reduces development costs and speeds up approval.
  • The CCP550 series offers a compact, high efficiency power solution with conduction and convection cooling options.

Excessive noise in hospital and clinical settings causes stress to patients and may delay recovery. It is also distracting and irritating and can affect the communication and effectiveness of nursing staff and clinicians.

The need for silent, sealed medical devices

With the increase in electronic equipment for patient monitoring and treatment, minimizing noise is a key requirement, making the use of cooling fans highly undesirable. Silent, fanless medical devices can ultimately improve the patient experience.

Optimizing device performance through efficient heat management

Ideally, these medical devices are sealed to allow them to be wiped down and disinfected. In such a sealed environment, it is advantageous for waste heat to be conducted away to the external enclosure to enable compact design of the end equipment and minimize the internal temperature rise, optimizing the reliability and service lifetime of the device.

Key features in power solutions for medical devices

Designers of medical devices and healthcare equipment need a power solution which can be successfully implemented and verified by regulators, minimizing development costs and approval time by using an easy to integrate, off-the-shelf product incorporating the specifications and features demanded by medical device applications.

An ideal AC-DC power solution for the latest medical devices is a low profile, small footprint, high efficiency, high density, conduction- or convection-cooled power converter with EMC and safety certification for global healthcare applications.

Introducing the CCP550 series: a compact, efficient power solution

The new CCP550 series of AC-DC power supplies, with its compact size, low profile, high efficiency design, combined with convection and conduction cooling options, makes the range a great fit for sealed and fanless medical devices, including BF rated applications, with power requirements from 200W to 400W.  The CCP550 has a compact 3” x 5” footprint, low 1.5” profile, high efficiency and high power density. These features allow it to be embedded into the device, with minimal waste heat conducted to the enclosure through the power supply baseplate.

Using conduction cooling, the CCP550 readily supports up to 300W at AC input voltages as low as 85VAC input. Using convection cooling, the product supports up to 235W at the same input voltage. When convection or conduction cooled, the optional 5V standby supply is rated up to 1A.

Ensuring safety and compliance through performance data

The CCP550 power supply’s product data sheet provides service life curves, based on the average operating temperature of key electrolytic capacitors. This specific product data can be used to evaluate the product service life, when installed in the individual application based on the component temperatures, daily usage, and thermal mission profile of the equipment in its unique cooling environment. It also identifies key component maximum temperatures for safety compliance, providing confidence that the cooling in the application is adequate for system safety approvals.

Summary

Noise reduction is crucial in healthcare settings to avoid patient discomfort and ensure staff efficiency. Sealed, fanless devices are ideal for healthcare environments which is why medical device designers need a power solution like the CCP550. This type of power supply has a compact, high efficiency design and cooling options to meet their medical application requirements.
